A certification in CSD will help you become the best Scrum developer and learn much more about Scrum and hence, help you perform better in the Scrum team. A CSD will also help you enhance your career opportunities which would enhance your salary and also provide you with incentives based on the company you choose to work for. This article explains the CSD certification and sheds more light on the salary of the certified Scrum developer and elaborates whether the course in certified Scrum developer is worth it.

What is Certified Scrum Developer Certification?

The Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) is a certification course offered by Scrum Alliance to individuals who are interested in becoming a scrum developer in a Scrum team. The course includes a formal training and technical skills assessment which helps the individuals to demonstrate their Scrum and Agile knowledge and use their engineering skills to develop valuable products. The course is designed for programmers (software developers) who want to learn to build software using Scrum. The CSD course teaches about various tools and techniques required to build good software incrementally and iteratively.

Benefits of CSD certification

  • Learning about the basics and scope of Scrum and the Scrum developer’s role in the team from a certified Scrum trainer

  • Demonstrating the core knowledge of Scrum and Agile to peers and recruiters.

  • Staying relevant to the market and getting recognized across all the industries that are adopting Agile practices.

  • Networking with Scrum experts who continuously improve the Scrum community by updating and reviewing recent advances.

The CSD certification allows the candidates to access the two-year membership with Scrum Alliance, which is a platform for experts in Scrum to communicate and update the Scrum knowledge to the world. This platform consists of local user groups and online social networks where professionals can gain access to discounts on Scrum gatherings and enjoy resources that could be accessed only by members. Hence, the demand for a CSD course is high for professionals who want to advance their careers in Scrum practices.

Scope of CSD Certification

The progression in technology in the present world requires companies to become Agile and deliver value continuously to keep the customers satisfied and to keep the business running. Organizations have to continuously keep track of the needs of the customer and meet the requirements to survive in the market. The software development industry has a high demand for jobs and skills such as developers and programmers. As companies want to become more Agile in their value-delivery, they start implementing Scrum to become Agile. Scrum is one of the most simple projects management frameworks for projects which function in a complex business environment. The popularity of Scrum has increased the demand for CSD professionals who can design complex projects and adapt suitable solutions. CSDs are also required in industries other than IT as Scrum is implemented in almost every industry.

Many industries such as banking and finance, education, architecture, construction, aerospace, etc want to carry out their work with companies that use the Agile methodology. Industries want fast results and early return on investment which also reduces the cost of performing multiple iterations. Organizations can execute and manage Agile projects using only a few members and hence, the operations of the project can easily be overlooked. IT hubs are growing every day and in all the countries and hence, the demand for a CSD professional will only rise in the future.

Salary Prospects of Certified Scrum Developer

Similar to any certification courses, individuals take up the certified Scrum developer course to increase their job opportunities and enhance their present salary. Candidates can take up the CSD course while they are a part of the Scrum process to improve their chances of earning a better salary and gaining a higher position. The salary of a CSD depends on the years of experience of the individual as a Scrum developer. Once the person has acquired the CSD certification, the salary would enhance every year with experience. The salary also depends on the region and the company in which the candidate works. In India, a CSD with 5-7 years of experience can earn up to 50k per month, and ones with 8-10 years of experience can earn up to 13L per annum. The high-paying scale for CSD is one of the main reasons why a developer should go for the Certified Scrum Developer certification. According to payscale, the Certified Scrum developer earning varies based on the country in which the individual is working in. In India, the average salary of a CSD is Rs.14,00,000. In the United States, the average salary is $92,386.

Requirements for the CSD certification

The candidate has to enroll in the certified Scrum developer certification offered by any registered education provider who is accredited to Scrum Alliance. The candidate has to undergo a five-day training which is instructed by a CSD instructor who is approved by Scrum Alliance.  The CSD certification could be achieved in two tracks which are listed below. An individual can take up any track and once a track is completed, the candidate receives a notification so that they can accept the CSD certification, and the CSD license is added to the profile which has a validity of two years.

  • Track 1 consists of a CSM course that lasts up to two days. Along with it, the track also consists of a CSD technical course that contains coding for three days.

  • Track 2 consists of a course called Introduction to CSD and CSD technical elective course which takes one day each to be completed. Apart from this, it also contains a CSD technical course which consists of coding that lasts for three days.

The candidate has to demonstrate their knowledge and practices by taking the REP instructor’s CSD assessment. This assessment could be in the form of an exam which is taken by the instructor to know how much you know about Agile and Scrum and would be taken in a classroom. After the CSD course, the instructor gives the information of the candidate to the system and recommends for certification.

Advantages of the CSD certification

Many people face the dilemma of taking up the CSD course or the CSM/CSPO course, as they feel the role of the developer is lower than the other two roles in Scrum. However, the developer is the backbone of the scrum process and the new Scrum update states that all the members of the Scrum team have an equal hierarchy. As the developers become more experienced, they need not be managed or supervised by any Scrum master as they become self-sufficient which is one of the Scrum values. The real part of the Scrum development is performed by the developers which is a reason why all the CSD-related jobs are high-paying and have many incentives.

If you take an example of a scenario where a Scrum team consists of five developers where two are senior developers over fifteen years of experience, and two have ten years of experience, and one with seven years of experience. This scrum team would not need any Scrum Master to guide the developers during the process and also the developers need not report to the admin. These team members would deal with bigger problems of the company and would find solutions to high levels of computer programming.

Conclusion

The Certified Scrum Developer course is one of the most popular courses offered by scrum alliance that increases the chances of individuals getting higher salaries and gaining incentives. Many CSD professionals are given high salaries as they are the backbone of the scrum team and develop valuable products. Top companies recruit individuals who are certified as they understand that such individuals understand the basics of Scrum and can function according to the requirement of the team. The CSD course salary is usually high in many companies but varies depending on the company and the country that the professional is working in. However, as long as the IT industry moves towards Agile practices, the demand for CSD professionals remains high.
