It occurs between two successive Sprint Planning meetings to keep the backlog healthy and organized. What do we understand by Sprint Planning?

Sprint Planning is an official meeting conducted by Product Owners and the Scrum Team to agree on and identify the Sprint Goals. In Sprint Planning, the Scrum Team discusses the Sprint Backlogs and Sprint Goals that produce qualitative results for the company or organisation. 

Sprint Planning is all about knowing and staying current with the new requirements and product readiness to deliver to the customers.   • Backlog-listed product priorities are checked. Moving the right item from backlog to sprint. 
  • Roles and responsibilities are finalized by the leaders or Product Owners in the Sprint Planning meeting.
  • Product Owners also need to track metrics for the Sprint.
  • To plan and execute demo sessions to demonstrate what the team has built.
  • The dates for the demo are finalised in a Sprint Planning meeting.
  • The products are reviewed during the meeting for delivery in the demo sessions.

Similarities between Product Backlog Refinement and Sprint Planning

Is Sprint Planning the same as Product Backlog Grooming? The answer to this question is NO! Still, Product Backlog Refinement and Sprint Planning share some similarities like the occurrence of a team meeting, sharing ideas and mutual understanding of the particular work within the Scrum, seeking to engage all attendees in the conversation and so on, both Sprint Planning and Product Backlog Refinement requires an experienced facilitator, an expert and a guide who can also act as the voice of the customers; 

In Spite of all the similarities Sprint Planning and Backlog Refinement shares, they have some differences also. 

Difference between Product Backlog Refinement and Sprint Planning?

Sprint Planning

  • It is an unofficial meeting.
  • It’s an official meeting.
  • The product owner does the backlog refinement and is responsible for maintaining the backlog.
  • The Product Owner meets the Development Team and ScrumMaster.

The ScrumMaster is responsible for the events of a Sprint Planning meeting.

  • It is conducted between two Sprint Meetings.
  • Sprint Planning is conducted once every week or so.
  • Only members involved in prioritizing backlog product list attend the Backlog Refinement meeting. 
  • Sprint Planning meetings involve the Scrum Team, Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Stakeholders. 
  • In the Backlog Refinement meeting, backlog products are estimated and discussed to prepare an approachable backlog list.
  • The prepared backlog list is discussed and estimated for the demo purpose in the Sprint Planning meeting.
