PMP certification is one of the most demanded certificates in the field of Project Management compared to other degrees or certificates, you are quite excited about the matter to know whether you are eligible to sit for the exam or not. Let’s check out the chart and then we will know more in detail about the conditions.
requirements | 4-year bachelor’s degree or global equivalent evaluation system | High school diploma degree or equivalent course worldwide |
Experience in years in the Project Management field | 3 | 5 |
Total hours of experience | 4500 | 7500 |
Education on Project Management | 35 hours | 5 hours |
How to meet the 35 hours Project Management education
This is one of the prerequisites of the exam. You have to enroll in such a course that teaches about Project Management. The education is given in the name of PMP certification training. Many relevant institutes provide this facility. This will also help you in preparing yourself for the exam.
How to show the experience in Project Management
You don’t need to lead a single project for 4500 hours or 7500 hours. You may work on different hundreds of projects at different times. But you have to keep a record of that projects. The acceptable experiences are given in the PMBOK guide. PMI or Project Management Institution has made it clear about how to show the experience and which ones are acceptable. Hence, some of the most feasible and commonest ways have been defined here
Other ways to gain experience
Full-time job as a Project Manager
This is the best way to earn that 4500 hours of experience. But everyone doesn’t get this opportunity. Still, if you have this scope then keep doing the job full time. If you don’t get enough hours to fulfill these 4500 hours, then change the role or job and go faster.
In case you are not a Project Manager
Then there are no alternatives to being a Project Manager. Either change the job or find other ways to get the role. Have a wider discussion with the employer that you are facing this problem and you need to spend these hours faster. Then they may manage your role anyhow. If your employers can’t help in this case, then there is no way to change the job.
Try a new company where you are going as a full-time Project Manager. Don’t focus on the salary, rather focus on working and earning those hours anyhow. Boost your working hours and be dedicated to earning more hours monthly to reach the 4500 hours faster. If nothing works, then work as a volunteer.
Work as a volunteer
In case you haven’t been able to get such a job. Then use the networking platforms in the local areas. There are different platforms where employers find unpaid volunteers for their projects. Find these projects to work on. Don’t look for salaries the first time. Try to show them your value and they themselves will offer you facilities that you couldn’t even think of. Just focus on gaining those real experiences. To remind you, all these works must have documents as evidence which you will have to show while applying.
Is it compulsory to become a PMI member to be eligible?
No. You don’t have to be a PMI member. But anyone can be a PMI member if they want. It will only provide some extra facilities, nothing else. Anyone can take the test without being a PMI member.
