Any considerable change in the workplace can be disorienting for the employees. This can happen to any change irrespective of whether it is planned or unplanned, gradual or swift. The possibility of disorientation can be more when the change is not managed rightly. So, it is the responsibility of business leaders to manage change. In turn, they can prevent any disconnection with the workforce. There are chances of disconnection to happen when the organization gets through a period of transition and disruption. Let us consider that some uncertainties prevail in the workplace. They can spawn fear, stress, resentment, frustration and rumors.

From the HR perspective, navigating dramatic changes in your industry and even your organization can be tough. But, as a team lead, you can do certain things from now to guide your team through the change. Here are some Change Management tips for leaders to help leaders like you:

1. Understand and Accept that Success Needs Failure at Times:

The first thing you will have to remember as a team lead is that Change Management is not a one-step process. You will have to learn and iterate many things over and over again. Nevertheless, with iterations, you will succeed. Your team will begin to see the effects of the change. This will happen irrespective of whether it is delivery of value quickly or not staying back when the competition gets tougher. If you see these things happening, change will turn out to be a movement. Your team will start organizing around the change.

You might be working in a slow-paced industry. Nevertheless, even in this type of industry, change is non-negotiable. The reason is technologies used in all industries are changing the way customers and employees go about a business. When a change comes and you do not adapt yourself, you cannot stay in the competition. The relieving thing is that adapting to change is not a big deal as you think. You can make Change Management a movement by doing certain things. They are defining the competition and goal to your team members. Also, you should accept failure and engage change agents all through the organization.

2. Have a Clear Idea of the Metrics for Success:

As a team lead, you should always remember that success should not be fuzzy. When you make your team members know how their contributions matter, they will stay motivated to achieve the desired goals. Every member of your team should visualize success in the same way. Also, they should be in lockstep on how to achieve the goal. To achieve it, you should regularly report the progress of your team towards the defined goals. Also, ensure that the targets are clear even when you decide on a new strategy. Even, it should happen when challenges crop up.

3. Learn As You Move Forward:

When you are leading your team through a change, there is every possibility that some unexpected challenges will crop up. You can succeed in Change Management when you learn tactics to adjust to those challenges cropping up. Remember that when you are marching towards the change, every step should be course-correct. Do not forget to re-evaluate then and there to ensure that you continue to stay on the mark. Learning when you are marching forward and teaching the same to your team will help with effective Change Management.

4. Communicate With Developers and Testers:

When it comes to Change Management, Developers and Testers play a crucial role. They are the ones, who will have to collaborate and communicate with the management. The organizational leaders should share any design changes with the Developers. Also, they should schedule those changes to an iteration.

When a major change takes place in a business, people often overlook this step. In other words, the changes required in the product are not properly communicated to the Developers. Otherwise, Developers are totally not communicated about the change. You should ensure that the Developers are communicated properly about the change. Even, it is better to discuss with them before you promise any new feature to your customers. The reason is that if the changes recommended by the customers are not implemented, they will not feel happy.

When explaining the changes to the Developers, it is important to have the QA team and Testers in place. It is better not to presume that the Developers would update the QA team and Testers. When they are communicated properly, testers will be ready with more effective tests. So, one of the important Change Management tips is to keep the Developers and Testers informed.

5. Balance Realism and Idealism:

When you are managing change, you should be realistic as a leader. The reason is that at times, perspectives can drive you towards idealism. In turn, there are chances that you will lose touch with reality. As against getting caught up in what could happen and what may happen, you should stay grounded when driving change.

Do not think that you can change your team members with ease. No one can change anyone unless and until people get ready to change themselves. Any change that comes with acceptance only will drive success. You can drive your team towards change only when you explain to them the benefits they will get when they make this change.

6. Acknowledge The Efforts of Your Team Members:

You might be planning for a small change. Even then, you need the efforts of your team to make changes to the process and behavior they follow. An effort to adapt to the change is actually an added burden to the day-to-day tasks of your team members. Also, it can be taxing for them. So, as a lead, you should never forget to acknowledge the efforts made by your team members to adapt themselves to the new procedures. When you do this, they will feel motivated to adapt themselves even perfectly to the change.

Let us consider that one of your team members is successfully moving towards the change. Let him know that he is doing things right. Also, thank him for his efforts and motivate him to keep going. In turn, you can reinforce positive behavior among other members as well. They will feel motivated to get your appreciation.

Let us consider that one of the members faces difficulty with adapting to the change. Spend time with the person to understand the issue he faces in adapting to the change. The person might need some support. When he gets this support from his team lead, he can adapt with ease.

7. Understand the Process of Change:

As you look for Change Management tips for leaders, you should remember one thing. No two initiatives for a change are the same. Nevertheless, most change initiatives that turn successful follow a similar set of Change Management procedures. All of them have a set of starting conditions and endpoints. The processes happen between these two points in most cases. It encompasses many steps that are brought together into three stages. They are follow-through, implementation and preparation. Here is what will happen during each of these stages:

  • Preparation:

As the team lead, you should be ready to prepare not only your team but also your organization. For instance, when you help your team members understand the requirements of change, you should also make your organization understand your vision. You should also convince your organization by explaining your plan to achieve the vision.

  • Implementation:

When you are implementing the change, you should remember one thing. Your implementation strategies for the changes in your project should go in line with your organizational objectives and vision.

  • Follow-Through:

You are also responsible for making sure that your team sticks to the procedures to be followed for putting the change into practice. You should also make sure that it gets embedded into the culture of your team and the practices of your team members.

8. Do not Force-Feed Change Initiatives:

As mentioned earlier, change is inherently uncomfortable. So, it is better to ensure that you find chances to make the change as easy as possible for your team. Make sure that your team members do not feel out of the loop. Ensure that they are not forced to use a new piece of software or new process. Only when you make any change, it is better to make sure that your team is part of the Change Management.

9. Be Aware of the Ripple Effect:

Organizations function using multi-layered and interconnected systems. A small change ripples out and impacts in a different way than you think. So, when you are planning for a change, look out across the organization and even farther. Ask for inputs from people to know how change is going to have an effect on the processes and the way things are done. Change Management and risk management go hand-in-hand. So, before you implement a change try to get a complete picture as much as possible.
