How Much is The Cost of CSM® Certification in Australia

The course fee covers your CSM certification and both exam attempts, and Australian providers quote it in Australian dollars inclusive of GST. What people miss is that the renewal fee is charged by Scrum Alliance in US dollars, so it moves with the exchange rate, and that the course fee may be deductible as a self-education expense if it relates to your current job rather than a job you are trying to get.

Key Highlights

  • The course fee is the certification cost. There is no separate exam charge, and two attempts are included.
  • Australian providers quote GST inclusive pricing, so the figure you see is usually the figure you pay.
  • Renewal is charged in US dollars at 100 dollars every two years, not in Australian dollars, so what leaves your account varies with the exchange rate.
  • The third exam attempt fee is also denominated in US dollars, at 25 dollars, which is why Australian sources quote slightly different figures.
  • Self-education deductions may apply if the course relates to your current employment. They generally do not if you are changing careers into the role.
  • If your employer pays or reimburses you, you cannot claim it.

What Is Fixed and What Varies

The useful way to think about cost in any market is separating the part Scrum Alliance sets from the part your provider sets.

Set by your provider, varies locally. The course fee. This differs by delivery format, city, class size and trainer, and Australian providers quote it in Australian dollars inclusive of GST. Live online is consistently cheaper than in person and removes travel entirely, which matters more in Australia than in most markets given the distances involved.

Set by Scrum Alliance, fixed in US dollars. The renewal fee of 100 US dollars every two years, and the 25 US dollar charge for a third exam attempt. These are the same everywhere and are not converted to local currency, which is the single most commonly missed detail about cost in Australia.

Included, so not a separate cost. The certification itself, two exam attempts, and two years of Scrum Alliance membership all come with the course fee. There is no separate exam registration, and no application process to pay for before you can enrol.

The global picture, including what drives the range, is in our breakdown of CSM certification cost. What follows is what differs if you are in Australia.

If you want to gauge your readiness before spending anything, our free CSM practice test takes a few minutes.

The Currency Detail That Catches People

Worth its own section, because it produces confusion in every Australian discussion of CSM cost.

Scrum Alliance charges renewal at 100 US dollars. Not an Australian equivalent, not a localised price. When you renew, your card is charged in US dollars and your bank converts it, so what actually leaves your account depends on the rate that day and on any foreign transaction fee your card applies.

The same applies to the third exam attempt fee, which is 25 US dollars. This is why you will see Australian sources quoting figures around 35 or 40 Australian dollars for it. They are not disagreeing; they are converting the same US denominated fee at different times.

Two practical implications.

Budget the renewal in US dollars. Roughly 50 US dollars a year, converted at whatever the rate is when it falls due. Over a ten year career that is 500 US dollars in fees, and the Australian dollar amount will differ each cycle.

Check your card's foreign transaction fee. A card charging two to three percent on international transactions adds a small amount each renewal. Minor, and worth knowing so the amount debited is not a surprise.

The full renewal picture, including the Scrum Education Units required alongside the fee, is in our guide to CSM renewal cost.

Tax Deductibility for Australian Learners

The genuinely Australia specific factor, and the one no cost comparison covers. It can change the effective cost substantially.

The Australian Taxation Office allows deductions for self-education expenses where there is a sufficient connection to earning your employment income. The ATO frames that connection two ways: the education maintains or improves the specific skills or knowledge required for your current employment activities, or it leads to, or is likely to lead to, an increase in your income from those current activities.

That wording produces a distinction that matters enormously for CSM specifically.

Already working as a Scrum Master, or in a role where Scrum knowledge applies. The connection to your current employment is reasonably direct, since the course maintains and improves skills you use now.

Taking CSM to move into a Scrum Master role from something unrelated. The connection is much weaker, because the expense relates to employment you hope to obtain rather than employment you currently have. The ATO is explicit that self-education relating to a new field is treated differently from self-education that improves your current role.

Your employer pays or reimburses you. You cannot claim it. The ATO states plainly that tuition, course, conference or seminar fees are not deductible where the employer reimburses you or pays on your behalf.

You have stopped working. The connection is lost once you cease income earning activities, so expenses incurred after that point are not deductible. The ATO gives the example of a course paid in instalments where only the payments made while employed retain the connection.

Two things to be clear about. This is a general description of the principle rather than advice on your position, and individual circumstances vary considerably. Check the current ATO guidance or speak to a tax professional before relying on it. And keep your invoice regardless, since substantiation is required either way.

The reason this belongs in a cost article is simple arithmetic. For someone already in an applicable role, a deduction meaningfully reduces the effective cost of the course. For someone changing careers into the role, it probably does not, and budgeting as though it will is a mistake.

GST and What the Quoted Price Includes

A smaller point, and it removes a common uncertainty.

Australian training providers generally quote course fees inclusive of GST, which means the advertised figure is what you pay rather than a base price with ten percent added at checkout. This differs from some overseas providers quoting exclusive prices, so comparing an Australian quote against an American one is not comparing like with like.

If you are booking as a business rather than as an individual and are registered for GST, the GST component may be recoverable through your business activity statement in the usual way. Again, that depends on your circumstances and is worth confirming with whoever handles your accounts.

What the fee should include, whichever provider you choose: the course itself, the certification, two exam attempts and two years of Scrum Alliance membership. If a quote appears low, check that certification is included rather than sold separately, and confirm the provider is Scrum Alliance approved. Only an approved Certified Scrum Trainer can issue the credential, which our guide to CSM certification eligibility covers.

The Total Cost of Ownership

Worth laying out, because people budget the course and forget everything after it.

Year zero. The course fee, in Australian dollars, inclusive of GST. This covers the certification, both exam attempts and two years of Scrum Alliance membership. If you take an in person course outside your own city, add flights and a night or two of accommodation, which in Australia frequently exceeds the difference between in person and online delivery.

Year two. Renewal at 100 US dollars, plus 20 Scrum Education Units. The SEUs are free in practice, since reading, webinars, user group meetings and volunteering all qualify, and 20 across two years is roughly ten hours a year.

Every two years after that. The same again, for as long as you want the credential active.

Occasional. A third exam attempt at 25 US dollars, which most people never need.

Across a ten year career that is the course once, plus 500 US dollars in renewal fees, plus around 100 hours of learning most working Scrum Masters accumulate without trying. Set against what the role pays in Australia, none of that is a large number. The point of listing it is that the honest figure is the course fee plus roughly 50 US dollars a year, not the course fee alone, and people who budget only for the first are surprised two years later.

One further consideration specific to Australia. Because the recurring fee is small and denominated in a foreign currency, it is easy to forget entirely. Setting a calendar reminder at the twenty two month mark is worth doing, since the credential lapses without both the fee and the SEUs, and reinstating attention to a lapsed certification is more effort than maintaining it.

Getting the Cost Down

Five approaches, in rough order of how much they save.

Ask your employer. The largest single saving available and the most frequently skipped. Organisations running Scrum usually have training budget, and it is an easy request to justify. Note the tax consequence: if they pay, you cannot claim a deduction, and being fully funded is better than a partial deduction in almost every case.

Choose live online over in person. Consistently cheaper, and in Australia it also removes domestic flights and accommodation, which can exceed the price difference between the two formats on their own.

Compare providers on the total, not the headline. Course fee plus travel plus two days away. An in person course in another city rarely compares well once that is included.

Check dates and cohorts. Providers price differently across dates and formats, and a few minutes comparing upcoming cohorts is worth doing.

Do not buy separate exam preparation. The course covers the exam, which is open book with two included attempts, as our guide to the CSM exam pattern sets out. Paid question banks are rarely necessary and free resources are sufficient for most people.

Time it against the financial year if a deduction applies. For anyone whose circumstances make the course deductible, incurring the expense inside the current financial year rather than just after it brings the benefit forward twelve months. That is a scheduling detail rather than a saving, and it costs nothing to consider when choosing a cohort date.

What is not worth doing is choosing on price alone without confirming Scrum Alliance approval. A course that does not lead to a registry entry is not a cheaper certification, it is a different product.

Is It Worth It in the Australian Market

Cost is only half the question, so briefly on the other half.

The strongest argument for the credential anywhere is access: a great many Scrum Master postings name it, and applications are screened on credentials before anyone assesses experience. Whether that holds in your part of the Australian market is checkable in ten minutes. Search Scrum Master roles in your city and count how many name CSM or an equivalent. That number is a better guide than any general claim.

Our honest assessment of what the certification is actually worth covers the calculation in full, including who it is genuinely not worth it for. Salary context is in our guide to Scrum Master salary ranges, and as everywhere, experience and location drive the figure far more than the credential does.

For current Australian dates, formats and pricing, CSM Certification Training in Australia lists upcoming cohorts including live online and in person delivery in the major cities.

In Person or Online in Australia

The format decision carries more weight here than in most markets, so it is worth separating properly.

Distance changes the arithmetic. In most countries an in person course means a train ride. In Australia it frequently means a flight and a hotel, and for anyone outside Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide or Canberra it may mean both regardless of which city hosts it. Once travel is included, in person can cost substantially more than the headline difference suggests.

Cohort availability differs. Major cities run courses regularly. Elsewhere the wait for an in person date can be weeks, whereas live online cohorts run frequently and are not tied to your location.

Time zones matter for online. A live online course delivered from Europe or North America may run at an awkward hour. Confirming the time zone before booking avoids two days of very early mornings, and Australian providers running local cohorts avoid the problem entirely.

What you lose online. The incidental conversation. A good deal of the value of a live course is hearing how other participants' organisations handle the same problems, and that happens more naturally in a room. Some people weight this heavily and others do not.

What you do not lose. Anything about the certification. Scrum Alliance requires 16 hours of contact time in person and permits a minimum of 14 hours for live virtual, and the credential issued is identical. Nobody can tell from the registry which format you took.

For most people in Australia the honest recommendation is live online with an Australian provider: local time zone, no travel, lower total cost, same credential. In person is worth the premium if you specifically value the room, and it is a preference rather than a quality difference. Current options for both are on the CSM Certification Training in Australia page.

Closing Thoughts

Most of what determines CSM cost in Australia is the same as anywhere: the course fee is the certification fee, the exam is included, and live online is cheaper than in person.

Three things are genuinely local and worth planning around. Australian providers quote inclusive of GST, so the advertised figure is usually what you pay. The renewal fee is denominated in US dollars, so budget it that way rather than in Australian dollars. And the course may be deductible as a self-education expense if it relates to the job you have, which is a meaningfully different position from the job you want.

That last one is worth checking properly before you book, because it changes the effective cost for one group of people and not at all for another, and knowing which group you are in is a five minute conversation with whoever does your tax.

For current dates, formats and pricing in Australian dollars, CSM Certification Training in Australia lists upcoming cohorts, and you can request the curriculum to see the full agenda. If you would rather check your readiness first, the free CSM practice test costs nothing and takes a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The course fee varies by provider, delivery format and city, and it covers the certification and two exam attempts with no separate exam charge. Australian providers quote inclusive of GST, so check current pricing with the provider directly.

No. Two attempts are included in the course fee. A third attempt costs 25 US dollars, charged by Scrum Alliance rather than by your provider.

Because it is paid to Scrum Alliance directly rather than to an Australian provider. It is 100 US dollars every two years, converted by your bank at the prevailing rate.

Possibly, if it has a sufficient connection to your current employment. It is much harder to claim if you are moving into the role from an unrelated field, and you cannot claim if your employer pays. Check current ATO guidance or a tax professional for your own position.

Australian providers generally quote GST inclusive, so the advertised figure is usually what you pay. Confirm when comparing against overseas providers, who may quote exclusive.

Yes, consistently, and it also removes travel and accommodation, which is a larger factor in Australia than in most markets.

No. The credential is issued by Scrum Alliance and appears identically in the registry regardless of where the course was taken.

Two days of course, then an hour for the exam within 90 days. Most people are certified inside a fortnight, as our guide to the CSM certification process sets out.

No. Live online cohorts run frequently and are not tied to your location, which matters for anyone outside the major cities where in person dates are less regular.

Yes. The credential is identical and the registry entry does not record the delivery format.

Some Scrum Master certifications allow you to sit the exam without a mandatory course, which lowers the entry cost. Whether that suits you depends on how you learn and, more practically, on which credential Australian employers in your field actually name in their postings.

The self-education deduction principles still turn on connection to your income earning activity, and contractors should confirm their own position with a tax professional since the circumstances differ from employment.

That depends on the provider rather than on Scrum Alliance. Payment options for Australian cohorts are listed on the CSM Certification Training in Australia page.
